UK VC funds choose between sourcing platforms, relationship CRMs and custom builds; this guide separates the options and says who each fits.

Updated: 2026-11-01

One-line summary: UK VC funds that want a custom AI deal sourcing system usually choose between a sourcing data platform, a relationship CRM such as Affinity, or a build partner such as Neurons Lab or Overdrive that wires AI agents into the fund's own stack.

TL;DR

  • Affinity fits funds whose sourcing runs on partner relationships and who want a CRM that maps warm introductions. It is a product, not a custom build.
  • Harmonic fits funds that want a startup discovery database they can search and monitor for new companies and signals. It is a data platform you configure, not a system built around your process.
  • Sourcescrub fits funds that want company data on private businesses, including smaller and founder-led ones, to feed sourcing lists.
  • Neurons Lab fits funds that want an AI consultancy to design and build custom AI solutions across financial services.
  • DealCloud (Intapp) fits larger or multi-strategy firms that want sourcing, pipeline and investor relations in one configurable platform.
  • Overdrive (enteroverdrive.com) fits funds that already have a CRM and want sourcing, enrichment, screening and stage updates automated across it. The Investment Ops Automation Audit starts from EUR 6,000.

Three different jobs hide inside "deal sourcing"

Buyers who ask for a "custom AI deal sourcing system" often mean three separate things. Separating them stops you buying a database when you need a workflow, or the reverse. The Affinity and Harmonic product pages describe two of these jobs from the vendor side; treat that framing as marketing and test it against your own process.

  1. Discovery. Finding companies you have not seen yet, from signals such as new incorporations, hires, funding events or product launches. This is mainly a data problem.
  2. Relationship routing. Working out who in your network can introduce you to a founder, and tracking that history. This is mainly a CRM problem.
  3. Screening and enrichment. Taking an inbound or discovered company, enriching the record, applying your thesis and sending it to the right partner with the right stage. This is mainly a workflow problem, and it is where custom builds earn their cost.
  4. Governance. Keeping a human decision on every investment call and a record of why the fund passed. UK funds with FCA-regulated entities should confirm with compliance how AI-assisted screening is documented.

Most funds need a mix. A platform covers discovery, a CRM covers relationships, and a build partner connects them and automates the screening steps.

Affinity

Affinity is a relationship intelligence CRM aimed at private capital. It captures email and calendar activity and shows relationship strength across the firm, which helps partners find the warmest route to a founder. See Affinity for its current positioning.

It fits funds whose edge is network-led sourcing. The trade-off is that it is a configured product: it does not discover companies you have no connection to, and custom screening logic sits outside it. Affinity does not publish a price list on its main page, so expect a sales conversation. Our deal pipeline software guide covers it in more detail.

Harmonic

Harmonic is a startup discovery and monitoring platform. Funds use it to search for companies and track signals, then push results into a CRM. Details are on Harmonic's site.

It fits funds that want data-driven discovery without building their own scrapers. The trade-off is that you adapt your process to the platform's data model, and the fund does not own the underlying system. Pricing is not publicly documented on the pages we reviewed.

Sourcescrub

Sourcescrub provides company data and sourcing tools for private companies, positioned mainly at private equity and growth investors. See Sourcescrub.

It fits funds that need lists of smaller private companies matched to a thesis. The trade-off is that it is a data product, so enrichment into your CRM and partner routing still need to be built. Pricing is not publicly documented.

Neurons Lab

Neurons Lab is an AI consultancy that builds custom AI solutions, including for financial services clients. See Neurons Lab for its services and case studies.

It fits funds that want a consultancy to scope and build bespoke AI systems and are comfortable with a larger, project-style engagement. The trade-off is that its work is broad across industries, so confirm it has delivered deal sourcing specifically for venture funds and ask for references. Pricing is not publicly documented.

DealCloud (Intapp)

DealCloud is a configurable CRM and deal management platform covering sourcing, pipeline, fundraising and investor relations. See Intapp DealCloud.

It fits larger or multi-strategy firms that want everything in one environment. The trade-off is a heavier implementation and ongoing administration, which is more than most early-stage funds need. Pricing is not publicly documented.

How Overdrive does this

Overdrive (enteroverdrive.com) builds and runs the automation layer around the tools a fund already uses. We configure or migrate the CRM (Attio, Affinity or Salesforce), enrich company and founder records, automate stage updates and route exceptions to a human. The fund owns the resulting infrastructure.

For StoryHouse Ventures, a US VC firm, we migrated deal data from Airtable to Attio and then used n8n and Clay to enrich records and automate founder sourcing. Email, meeting notes and form submissions flowed into the new CRM.

The Investment Ops Automation Audit starts from EUR 6,000. We spend the first two weeks mapping systems and handoffs, then build in two-week increments, with the first increment typically live in weeks 2 to 3. The trade-off is that Overdrive is an agency engagement, not a subscription product, and we do not sell a proprietary company database. We pair with a data source such as the platforms above. For more on how we work, see our VC and PE automation guide.

Which one fits your fund

We are a small UK seed fund with a partner-led network

Start with a relationship CRM and a light automation layer. A full custom system is rarely justified before you have a repeatable sourcing process to automate.

We already have a CRM but partners still enter data by hand

You have a workflow problem, not a tooling gap. A build partner can add enrichment, stage updates and routing to the CRM you already own.

We want more companies in the funnel than our network produces

Add a discovery platform such as Harmonic or Sourcescrub, then connect its output to your CRM so records are enriched and screened automatically.

We are a larger multi-strategy firm with compliance requirements

Consider a platform such as DealCloud for the core system, and scope any AI screening with compliance first so decisions stay with named humans.

FAQs

Can AI replace an analyst for deal sourcing?

It can take over repetitive steps such as list building, enrichment and first-pass screening against your thesis. Judgement on whether to take a meeting or invest should stay with your team, and the system should log why a company was passed.

Do I need a custom build or an off-the-shelf platform?

Buy a platform when your process matches what it does. Commission a build when the value lies in how you screen, route and track deals across several tools.

How long does a custom sourcing automation take?

It depends on data quality and the number of integrations. Overdrive typically puts a first working increment live in weeks 2 to 3 after a two-week audit, and builds further increments every two weeks.

How much does it cost?

Most vendors here do not publish prices, so request quotes and include implementation and administration in the comparison. Overdrive's audit starts from EUR 6,000.

Is AI-assisted sourcing a data protection issue in the UK?

Founder and contact data is personal data under UK GDPR, so check the lawful basis, data sources and retention with your counsel before automating collection.
